Town Hall Talks: The Spies Next Door
The Boca Raton Historical Society is proud to present a Town Hall Talk featuring Dr. Peter Barrett on May 16, 2024!
Town Hall Talks is an evening lecture program given in Boca Raton's original "Town Hall". The 2023 - 2024 season consists of five (5) special speakers who will present interesting topics from their area of expertise.
Dr. Peter Barrett, a Boca Raton native, will share thrilling tales of espionage during World War II. Growing up in a family that owned the Boca Raton Villas, Barrett’s stories include witnessing evidence of German submarines attacking merchant shipping off the shores in 1942 and probable espionage activities next door.
Doors open at 6 PM for check-in and refreshments.
Lectures begin at 6:30 PM in the Council Chambers.

Town Hall Talks: The BRAAF and the BRAAF Fire Department
The Boca Raton Historical Society is proud to present Town Hall Talks: The Boca Raton Army Air Field and the BRAAF Fire Department, featuring Thomas R. Wood!
Town Hall Talks is an evening lecture program given in Boca Raton's original "Town Hall". The 2023 - 2024 season consists of five (5) special speakers who will present interesting topics from their area of expertise.
Featured lecturer: Thomas R. Wood, CFO, FIFireE, and retired Chief of the Boca Raton Fire Department, has spent years researching the Boca Raton Army Air Field and its Fire Department. Wood will share information about the many incidents the BRAAF Fire Department handled including the crash of a B34 Lexington bomber on May 12, 1944 - eighty years ago. Nine soldiers lost their lives in the crash. Through Wood’s efforts, a state historical marker commemorating the tragedy was unveiled on FAU’s campus in 2021.

The Boca Raton Historical Society is proud to present Town Hall Talks: Small Town, Big Secrets, featuring Sally J. Ling!
Town Hall Talks is an evening lecture program given in Boca Raton's original "Town Hall". The 2023 - 2024 season consists of five (5) special speakers who will present interesting topics from their area of expertise.
Featured lecturer: Sally Ling, “Florida’s History Detective,” is an author, speaker, and historian specializing in Florida history. She was a longtime journalist and has penned twenty fiction and nonfiction books. She has appeared in several feature-length TV documentaries included “The Secret Weapon That Won World War II.” Join us as Sally discusses the Boca Raton Army Air Field, the Army Air Force’s only wartime radar training base, and the impact of the war on our local citizens.

The Boca Raton Historical Society is proud to present Town Hall Talks: Florida During WWII, featuring Eliot Kleinberg!
Town Hall Talks is an evening lecture program given in Boca Raton's original "Town Hall". The 2023 - 2024 season consists of five (5) special speakers who will present interesting topics from their area of expertise.
Eliot Kleinberg is a native Floridian, longtime Palm Beach Post reporter, and creator of the “Post Time” weekly history column and “Florida Time” which appeared in papers statewide. He has published over a dozen books relating to Florida including “Weird Florida,” and “War in Paradise.” In this talk, Eliot will share his extensive research on World War II’s impact on the Sunshine State. Sponsored by Florida Humanities.

The Boca Raton Historical Society is proud to present Town Hall Talks: My Personal History of the Personal Computer, featuring Dr. Dave Bradley!
Town Hall Talks is an evening lecture program given in Boca Raton's original "Town Hall". The 2023 - 2024 season consists of five (5) special speakers who will present interesting topics from their area of expertise.
Featured lecturer: Dave Bradley (“Dr. Dave”) is a retired IBM engineer who was part of the original design team for the IBM PC personal computer, the ancestor of all “PC” style computers, manufactured right here in Boca Raton, Florida. His claim to fame is writing the code for “Control Alt Delete” - to reboot the computer, a trick all PC users know and love. Dr. Dave will take us on an entertaining history of the development of the machine that revolutionized the world.

The Boca Raton Historical Society is proud to present Town Hall Talks: Florida, A History in Pictures, featuring Jeff Davies & Mike McGinness!
Town Hall Talks is an evening lecture program given in Boca Raton's original "Town Hall". The 2023 - 2024 season consists of five (5) special speakers who will present interesting topics from their area of expertise.
Featured lecturer: Jeff Davies and Mike McGinness are native Floridians with a love of history. Many years ago, they formed a Facebook group for people with similar interests - today there are over 218,000 members including scholars, students, politicians, and just plain folks who post their stories and images about Florida history. Davies and McGinness will share images and stories from their new book “Florida: A History in Pictures” featuring over 130 seldom seen photographs revealing the fascinating history of the Sunshine State.

The Boca Raton Historical Society is proud to present Town Hall Talks: Pearl City, featuring Dr. Candace Cunningham!
Town Hall Talks is an evening lecture program given in Boca Raton's original "Town Hall". The 2023 - 2024 season consists of five (5) special speakers who will present interesting topics from their area of expertise.
Featured lecturer: Dr. Cunningham is an Assistant Professor of History at Florida Atlantic University specializing in African American, Gender Studies, and Public History. Candace will share information on a series of interviews she did with longtime residents of Boca Raton’s historic black community for the Boca Raton Museum of Art’s exhibit “Black Pearls,” currently on display at the Schmidt Museum through December 2023.
